Subject and Verb
Agreement
Subject and verb must
agree in number: both must be singular, or both must be plural. Problems occur
in the present tense because one must add an -s or -es at the end of the verb
when the subjects or the entity performing the action is a singular third
person: he, she, it, or words for which these pronouns could substitute.
Here are some examples
of subject verb agreement (the subject is bolded and the verb underlined):
Ø My
dog always growls at the postal carrier.
Ø Basketballs
roll across the floor.
Ø I
don’t understand the assignment.
Ø These
clothes are too small for me.
Ø Peter
doesn’t like vegetables.
Singular Indefinite
Pronouns
Here are some examples
of subject verb agreement with singular indefinite pronouns:
Ø Each

Ø Somebody
will pay for this.
Ø Anybody
is more fun than you.
Ø Something
is very wrong here.
Ø Everybody
enjoys a good book.
Ø Nothing
has been determined as of yet.
Plural Indefinite
Prounouns
Here are some examples
of subject verb agreement with plural indefinite pronouns:
Ø Both
are qualified for the job.
Ø Many
went to the beach and got sunburned.
Ø Few
know what it really takes to get ahead.
